ChatGPT prompt for RPG builds

Five copy-paste prompts that turn an AI chat into a theorycrafter: a build for your class and playstyle, a level-by-level unlock order, gear swaps and a fix when the build stops working.

Planning a character build usually means reading forum threads, watching a 40-minute video and still not knowing which version applies to your level, your gear and the way you like to play. An AI chat can do the first pass for you in a minute, and it can explain why each choice works instead of just handing you a list.

The trick is to give it the details a good build guide would ask for: the game, your class or character, how far you are, your playstyle and what you already own. The more specific you are, the less generic the answer. Then ask it to show the weak spots, so you are not surprised by the first boss that counters it.

One honest warning: AI models learn from older text, so they can miss recent patches, nerfs and new items, and sometimes they invent skill names. Treat the answer as a strong draft. Check skill names and numbers against the in-game screens, the patch notes or the game’s wiki before you spend respec currency.

The prompts

Replace every [bracket] with your real details, then paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok.

Prompt 1

The build theorycrafter

I'm playing [game] as a [class/character] at [level or progress point]. My playstyle is [e.g. aggressive melee / stealthy / support / ranged caster]. Suggest a build: key stats, skills, gear, and the order to unlock them. Explain why it works and its biggest weakness. Note if anything may have changed in recent patches.

The core prompt. Add your platform and difficulty if they matter, for example console or hardcore mode.

Prompt 2

Level-by-level roadmap

Take this build for [game]: [paste the build or describe it]. Turn it into a roadmap from my current level [level] to [target level]. For each stage, tell me what to put points into, which skills to unlock, and one item or upgrade to look for. Flag the point where the build "comes online" and what to do if I get there under-geared.

Good for long RPGs where a build feels weak for the first few hours.

Prompt 3

Work with what I own

Here is my current gear and inventory in [game]: [list weapons, armor, items, currency]. Using only what I have, plus anything easy to get in [current area], suggest the best version of a [playstyle] build right now. Then list the 3 upgrades worth chasing next, in order.

Stops the AI from building around a rare drop you will never see.

Prompt 4

Fix a build that is not working

My [game] build is struggling. Build: [describe stats, skills, gear]. Problem: [e.g. I die in two hits / damage falls off against bosses / I run out of mana]. Diagnose the most likely cause, suggest the smallest change that fixes it, and tell me what I would give up. Do not tell me to restart.

Describe exactly when it goes wrong. "Bosses" and "groups of enemies" need different fixes.

Prompt 5

Co-op and party fit

I play [game] with [number] friends who use [their classes or roles]. Suggest a build for my [class] that fills the gap in our group, and explain how it combines with theirs. Include one combo we can practice together and one thing I should stop doing so I do not get in their way.

Useful for co-op RPGs, MMOs and team games where roles matter more than raw damage.

Worked example

Situation: you are about 15 hours into Skyrim, level 18, and want to play a sneaky archer but keep getting caught.

What you paste: Prompt 1 with "Skyrim, level 18, stealth archer, I like sneaking and avoiding melee". The AI suggests focusing perk points on Archery and Sneak, wearing light armor so you can still move quietly, and opening every fight with a sneak attack from range. It names the build’s weakness: once enemies close the distance, you have little defense.

Next: Prompt 3 lists your current bow, arrows and armor and gets a "best version right now" plus three upgrades to look for. When groups still rush you, Prompt 4 suggests the smallest fix: pick fights from higher ground and carry a backup plan for melee, rather than rebuilding the character.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT make a good build for any game?

It does best with popular games that have lots of guides written about them, and with genres where builds are about stats, skills and gear. For brand-new games or games that change every patch, use it to understand the logic of a build, then check names and numbers against the game itself or recent patch notes.

Why does the AI suggest skills or items that do not exist?

AI models sometimes fill gaps with confident guesses. Ask it to mark anything it is unsure about, paste the real skill list from your game, or say which patch or version you are on. Giving it the in-game text removes most of the guessing.

Is using AI for builds cheating?

Using it for single-player planning is the same as reading a guide or asking a friend. In competitive or online games, follow the game’s rules: planning a build is fine, but do not use AI tools that play or automate the game for you.
