Five copy-paste prompts that turn your budget, your pantry and your schedule into a realistic week of meals and one grocery list.
Meal planning saves money mostly because it stops the nightly “what’s for dinner?” scramble that ends in takeout. The catch is that planning takes time and energy you may not have on a Sunday. AI can do the boring part: build a week around what you already own, reuse ingredients so less food goes to waste, and hand you a grocery list sorted by store section.
Give it real constraints: how many people you are feeding, how much you want to spend, how much time you have on weeknights, allergies, and the foods people in your house simply will not eat. The more honest the input, the more usable the plan.
One warning: AI chats usually do not know today’s prices at your store. Treat any cost estimate as a rough guess and check it against your store’s app or weekly flyer. Always check allergens yourself.
The prompts
Replace every [bracket] with your real details, then paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok.
Prompt 1
Weekly dinner plan
Plan 7 dinners for [number] people with a grocery budget of about [amount] for the week. Weeknight cooking time: [e.g. 30 minutes max]. Kitchen: [e.g. oven, stovetop, slow cooker]. Avoid: [allergies and dislikes]. Lean on low-cost staples like beans, rice, eggs, frozen vegetables and seasonal produce, and reuse ingredients across meals so nothing goes to waste. Plan leftovers to cover [2] lunches. Show the plan as a table: day, meal, rough prep time.
Start with dinners only. Add breakfasts and lunches once the dinner plan works for your household.
Prompt 2
Pantry first
Here is what I already have: [list fridge, freezer and pantry items]. Rewrite this meal plan so it uses as much of that as possible before I buy anything new: [paste plan]. Mark which ingredients I still need to buy.
Do this before you shop. Using what you already own is the easiest saving there is.
Prompt 3
One grocery list
Turn this meal plan into one grocery list grouped by store section (produce, meat and protein, dairy, pantry, frozen). Combine duplicates and give quantities for [number] people. Mark items where a store brand or frozen version is usually a fine swap. Do not guess prices.
Paste the list into your phone’s notes app and check items off as you go.
Prompt 4
Budget rescue
My grocery list came out higher than my budget of [amount]. Here is the list with the prices I found: [paste]. Suggest swaps that cut the cost without wrecking the plan, such as cheaper proteins, a meatless night or using one ingredient in more meals. Show which meals change.
Run this after you check real prices in your store’s app or flyer.
Prompt 5
Sunday prep plan
Give me a [90]-minute prep plan for this week of meals: [paste plan]. Order the steps so the oven and stovetop are used at the same time, tell me how to store each item, and flag anything I should freeze instead of keeping in the fridge.
If you are unsure how long something keeps, check official food safety guidance rather than relying on the AI.
Worked example
Situation: two adults and a child who will not eat spicy food, a weekly grocery budget you set yourself, no more than 30 minutes of cooking on weeknights, and a bag of rice, dried black beans and frozen spinach already in the pantry.
What you paste: those details into Prompt 1. The AI suggests seven mild dinners, such as black bean tacos, a sheet-pan chicken and vegetable night and a big pot of vegetable soup that also covers two lunches.
Next: Prompt 2 works the rice, beans and spinach into three of the meals. Prompt 3 builds the grocery list. You check prices in your store’s app, find the total runs a little over, and Prompt 4 swaps one chicken dinner for an egg fried rice night that uses up leftover rice.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT know grocery prices near me?
Usually not reliably. Most AI chats do not have live prices for your store. Use the AI for the plan and the list, then check costs in your store’s app, website or weekly flyer.
Is an AI meal plan healthy?
It can be a sensible starting point if you ask for balanced meals, but it is not medical or dietitian advice. If you have a health condition or a special diet, check the plan with a doctor or registered dietitian.
How do I stop the AI from suggesting expensive or unusual ingredients?
Tell it what you are willing to buy and where you shop, and ask for common, low-cost ingredients only. If it slips, reply: "Replace anything unusual with a cheaper, common ingredient."
